Where Fluid-Applied Waterproofing Fits
Fluid-applied membranes are used when a dampproof coating isn’t enough:
- Foundation and backfilled walls below a high water table
- Finished basements and below-grade occupied space
- Elevator pits and sump areas
- Retaining walls and site walls with soil on one face
- Cast-in-place concrete on civil and infrastructure projects
- Any specification calling for an elastomeric, seamless membrane
What We Install
We install the system your spec calls for, including products from Tremco, Epro, and W.R. Meadows. Two common types are:
- Polymer-modified asphalt emulsions (like Epro EcoBase): water-based, cold-applied, low-odor membranes. Check the product requirements before applying to damp or green concrete.
- Modified polyurethane membranes (like Tremco TREMproof 250GC): high-solids membranes applied by roller or trowel. Thickness and number of lifts depend on the product and spec.
Both form a continuous membrane. Crack-bridging and backfill requirements depend on the product and the job.
Surface Prep Is the Job
Fluid-applied membranes are fully bonded systems, which means the substrate does the heavy lifting. Laitance, curing compounds, form release, dust, and loose material all stop the membrane from bonding.
Surface prep is our core trade. We clean the concrete, fill cracks, voids, and honeycomb, treat cold joints and footing transitions, and blast to the specified profile when the spec calls for it. We bring our own blasting equipment.
Submittals
For commercial and civil jobs, we prepare the required product data, safety data sheets, application instructions, compatibility letters, and warranty documents before work starts.
Application and Verification
- Applied at the manufacturer’s coverage rate and the specified thickness, in one or more lifts
- Wet film thickness checked during application to confirm build
- Detailing at penetrations, cold joints, inside and outside corners, and footing-to-wall transitions
- Coordination with drainage board, protection course, insulation, and backfill trades
- Application within the manufacturer’s temperature and substrate moisture windows
